Info-mercials

One of my fondest memories of hanging out with my Grandma Dorothy is time spent watching infomercials. Sounds strange...but infomercials can be highly entertaining. There is a comforting sameness about them - no matter where you are on Earth.

And yet - even while the format is familiar....I have found some of the product line here on Chinese TV to be hilarious.

Product #1: Talking Pig/Bunny
Want to tell your girlfriend how you really feel? Speak through a stuffed animal - record your voice on a message saying Wo ai ni...(I love you)...and then send the stuffed pig (I think it was a pig...but sometimes it looked like a rabbit) to the one you love. Nothing says I love you like a talking oinker.

Product #2: Lighten that Skin
This commercial almost made me raise my black fist into the air...but it was just too hilarious. It had everything that a good infomercial needs: TV stars giving testimonials (which I could not understand); some lady in a lab coat proclaiming how she had studied her product and brought it from the South Korea.

The weirdest thing was - I expected a skin lightener commercial to talk about people trying to be European. But apparently, the standard of white beauty for this product was all about Korea. Soooo weird. My black fist, all set to protest a global standard of European beauty, was just plain confused!
